Gulf Medical University Receives Initial Accreditation for Masters in Clinical Pathology With Effect From 1st Jan 2009
INTRODUCTION:
Clinical pathology is an expansive discipline that is anchored in the clinical laboratory and encompasses a fund of knowledge, reasoning and skills in patho- physiology, diagnostics and therapeutics. The appropriate constituents of study in this field and the best means for evaluating its training are topics of continuous evolution, as they are in all fields of medical practice.
DURATION:
The proposed Masters program in Clinical Pathology, a 24 months full time program with an annual intake of 5 students is designed to provide an intensive training in the theory and practice of clinical pathology with emphasis on the understanding of the pathological basis of diseases. The program consists of theoretical (lectures, seminars, case based group discussions) and practical studies including benchwork, skills – lab and hospital laboratory – based sessions followed by research and submission of a thesis.

The program is designed to provide opportunities to gain and develop relevant knowledge and skills to the students in making them suitable for future employment in the field of Clinical Pathology in academia, research or laboratory diagnostic services.
The didactics part of the program is primarily based in the Gulf Medical College – Ajman, and is offered jointly by the departments of Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine. The practical training in the second year will be offered in the hospital laboratory of the Gulf Medical College Hospital and Research Center – Ajman and other MoH hospital laboratories. The Masters program in Clinical Pathology will form a part of a wider academic scenario of taught postgraduate courses related to, and integrated with, the core scientific expertise available at the Gulf Medical College and Hospital, Ajman.
- Further Ph.D. / M.D. studies.
- Practicing as Clinical Pathologist in UAE after fulfilling the requirements for MOH evaluation.
- Resident trainee positions in Clinical Pathology abroad.
- Teaching Assistantship in medical colleges.
- Research Assistantship in universities, research centers, and biomedical corporations (R&D).
- Director of laboratories after two years in the field.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The following are the minimum requirements for admission into the Clinical Pathology Program in GMCA:
- Bachelor degree in Medicine (MBBS, M.B.Ch.B), from a University / Institute listed in WHO directory of medical schools.
- Distinct undergraduate performance of GPA of 3 on a 4-point scale, or equivalent grade (“B”).
- English language proficiency test score of 550 for TOEFL and 6.5 for IELTS.
- The candidate must show capability to pursue an academic career and research.
- Desirable:
Relevant academic and professional experience.
A score of (A) in the MBBS subjects of Pathology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry.
