Gulf Medical College celebrates World Health Day 2008 at Safeer Mall, Ajman on 7th Of April 2008 from 3.00pm to 10.00pm.

7th of April 2008, Gulf Medical College, Ajman marked the “World Health Day” through daylong programs. The celebration was inaugurated in the college by Dean, Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, followed by the screening of the movie ‘An inconvenient truth’, on the theme of the day ‘Protecting health from climate change’.

The celebrations continued in the afternoon as a community based awareness – service campaign, in collaboration with and hosted at Safeer Mall Ajman, the first of a series.

At the campaign, running continuously for 7 hours, from 3 pm to 10 pm, fifty GMCA medical students provided service in shifts to the visitors of the mall. Posters and Roll ups were displayed conveying the theme and sub-themes of the day. The team checked blood pressure, weight and height, calculated BMI and advised on further investigations for persons found to be at risk. The public was educated at a personal level on lifestyle changes for healthy living with the help of pamphlets. They invested their time and efforts to convey a word to the people of Ajman to have a safer future highlighting the need for investing in health in the face of the current and future global threats that has and respects no borders.

By the end of the day, about 1000 citizens were served, advised and their concerns alleviated. 23% were found to have blood pressure above normal and 65% had BMI above normal. The response was overwhelming and experience marvelous for all those who participated in it. This program will be periodically conducted to maintain the word and satisfy a need clearly felt by the public and by us.

The event was organized by the college, developed by the GMC Community Medicine Department, and attended by the faculty and students.
