Ajman’s First ‘Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography’ Performed at GMC Hospital

Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography, an advanced diagnostic test which helps to detect stroke-causable blockages and causes of cerebral bleeding in the blood vessels of a patient’s head and neck, was recently performed for the first time in the Emirate of Ajman at GMC Hospital, the leading academic hospital owned and operated by Thumbay Group – UAE.

The patient, a 47-year-old Indian male, was first taken to a government hospital following severe headache diagnosed as resulting from hypertension. At the hospital, the patient underwent CT scan of the brain, which indicated subarachnoid hemorrhage. 

In order to confirm the source of bleeding and its corresponding vessel, the patient was referred to GMC Hospital, it being the only one in the Emirate of Ajman with Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography. When he was brought in, his blood pressure was still high. He was administered proper treatment for hypertension and then prepared for Angiography by the team led by Dr. Mohamed Hamdy, Specialist A Neurology at GMC Hospital and Assistant Professor of Neurology at Gulf Medical University.

Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography was then performed on the patient, which showed very small (3mm) ACOM aneurysm and minimal subarachnoid hemorrhage with spasm of anterior cerebral artery. Dr. Mohamed Hamdy said that the patient would be subject to either coiling or clipping of the aneurysm as second step, based on medical opinion, the patient’s condition and his family’s decision.
