The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) at Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman conducted a day long Basic Surgical Skills Workshop

The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) at Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman conducted a day long Basic Surgical Skills Workshop on the 21^st of January, 2014.

The workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to get a one-on-one hands-on experience of basic surgical skills in a safe, controlled and monitored environment. The course was tailored according to current international guidelines in Universal precautions, Hand washing, surgical scrubbing, Operating theater protocol, Knotting and suturing techniques. Over 26 doctors, medical students and nurses from the U.A.E participated in the intensive workshop which was accredited by Ministry of Health, UAE for 5 CME Hrs.

Professor Manda Venkatramana, Dean-College of Medicine, Professor of Surgery and Director of CASH, GMU, inaugurated and welcomed the delegates and explained the objectives of the workshop. He introduced the GMU team to the delegates who would be facilitating the hands-on sessions.

Following a didactic session on sutures techniques and Universal precautions, Dr. Manda Venkatramana expertly facilitated the station on suturing techniques. Dr. Nishida C. conducted the session on Knotting techniques while Mr. Abimon Sayed led the session on hand-washing and surgical scrubbing. Mr. Gigeesh George and Mr. Aboobakker KV took the delegates through the procedures for sterile gloving, gowning and maintaining sterile field in the OT in the simulated Operating theater setup.

The participants’ response to the session was very encouraging and positive. C.A.S.H plans to conduct more such sessions in the future.
