CURIE CENTER, INDIA TO SET-UP CANCER UNIT AT GMC HOSPITAL, AJMAN
The GMC Hospital and Research Center Ajman has entered into an agreement with Curie Center for Oncology, to set up a Cancer Unit at its hospital. studies are in progress and it will start functioning soon said Mr. Thumbay Moideen, President of the hospital in a press release issued today.
Dr. Ajai Kumar, Chairman of Curie Center for Oncology, Bangalore, India visited the hospital to make preliminary studies for this proposed unit. He informed that further need-based study would be conducted shortly to understand the incidence of cancer in the country. “Cancer, being an emotional disease has to be carefully screened, diagnosed and treated. It is not like any other ailment”, he said.
Initially, the new center will take up screening for cancer and detected cases will be treated both in the United Arab Emirates and in India. In cases, where advanced treatment is needed, patients will be advised of treatment details at its center in Bangalore, said Dr. Ajai Kumar. “We want to alleviate the problems before patients I get into advanced stages of the disease”, he added. GMC Hospital will guide the patients to Curie Center for further treatment. Surgery is very important in certain cases and Curie Center in Bangalore has all the required facilities for advanced treatment.
GMC Hospital also plans to set-up a Video Conferencing facility, whereby patients can interact live with experts from India and USA. It will be a virtual consultation program, which reduces a lot of travel and other discomforts for the patients. Initial diagnosis and radiological tests can be done at GMC Hospital. Staging, proper diagnosis and decision regarding treatment modalities can be made and patients will be advised for further treatment through this virtual consultation facility, explained Dr. Ajai Kumar. This facility will also advice patients about the correct line of treatment and duration of stay in the hospital, if patients require further treatment at Curie Center. It will benefit the patients a lot, he said.
The new set-up is expected to be operational from December 2003. “We will strive to make this center as one of the credible cancer centers in the region”, said Mr. Thumbay Moideen. The center, once established will also undertake research by setting up a clinical research unit. It is very important to identify the common reasons and it would be interesting to study the cultural and environmental factors responsible for the prevalence of cancer, especially in the region. We are happy that the expertise of Curie Center will be made available in the UAE, he added.
