White Coat Ceremony – ‘New batch of students’ initiated into healthcare profession at Gulf Medical University

Dr. Jack C Borders Jr., MD, Director Global Services Johns Hopkins International initiated the new batch of MBBS and BPT students at a White coat ceremony held at the University premises on the 13th of September 2008. Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, CEO Medical Practice & License Ministry of Health UAE was the Guest of Honor. Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of the University presided over the function. Many VIPs and dignitaries attended the ceremony. Apart from these eminent personalities, parents, relatives and friends witnessed the function.

Provost, Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, in her welcome address mentioned about the achievements of the University and congratulated the students on choosing to be healthcare professionals. She explained about the importance of the initiation process for the students. Later, Mr. Moideen honored the guests by presenting special mementos.

The White Coat Ceremony, a highlight of the orientation process, signifies the student’s commitment to the healthcare profession and its responsibilities and obligations. New students are personally cloaked in their first white coats by College faculty, and then recite the pledge. They assume the mantle of the medical profession in a meaningful ritual before an audience of mentors, family and friends. The donning of coats by the students acknowledges their initiation into the world of healthcare. The ceremony is designed to impress upon the first-year students, the significance and symbolism of the white coat.

The college offers M.B.B.S-Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, B.P.T-Bachelor of Physiotherapy programs, Doctor of Dental Medicine-DMD, Doctor of Pharmacy – Pharm.D GMC-RACGP- Fellowship Program in Family Practice and GMC & McKenzie Institute, New Zealand offers postgraduate program in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. The main aim is to impart high quality medical education. This is the first medical school in the region, which offers admissions to both boys and girls of all nationalities.

Gulf Medical College is recognized and approved as an institution for higher education by the Ministry of Education, UAE. GMC is listed in World Directory of Medical Schools by WHO and also listed in IMED under the auspices of FAIMER. GMC is offering M.B.B.S degree programs with a capacity for 60 students & B.P.T Programs with a capacity for 25 students with limited seats for both boys and girls of all nationalities. It has an international faculty and a student cohort from 40 nations. Training at the college is on par with any of the best and well-established medical colleges in the world.
