GMC in association with City Centre conducts World Health Day, 2007 – Over 2000 citizens benefited
7th of April 2007, GMC marked the world health day through conducting a community based awareness – service campaign, the first of a series. The activity was carried out in collaboration with and hosted at City Center Ajman. The campaign was conveyed 10 am to 10 pm continuously. Fifty GMCA medical students provided services to the public in 4 consecutive shifts extending for 12 hours, 10 am to 10 pm. Posters and banners were displayed conveying the theme and sub-themes for that day “International Health Security” urging investing in health and building a safer future, through protecting the public from the emerging global threats. GMC students discussed with the public in personalized heart to heart talks many issues such as SARS, AIDS, Avian flu, Bioterrorism, global warming and environmental degradation. distributed brochures conveying the sources, hazards and remedies for these hazards. A video film developed by one of students was exhibited on Bioterrorism. They screened blood pressure, weight and height, calculated BMI and advised the public on actions they need to take. They invested their time and efforts to Convey a word to the people of Ajman to have a safer future highlighting the need for investing in health in the face of the current and future global threats that has and respects no borders.
By the end of the day, about 2000 citizens were served, advised and their concerns alleviated. It was a marvelous experience for all those participating. in it… That effort will be periodically conducted to maintain the word and satisfy a need clearly felt by the public and by us.
The event was organized by the college, developed by the GMC Community Medicine Department, and attended by the dean and faculty.
